A lot has happened in the last couple of days in Copenhagen. The sold out event saw the field widdled down to 170 players in the 2 part day 1’s series. The starting field of 460 players had stiff competition from many of the PokerStarts Team of poker pro’s.
Noah Boeken is still in the event, but not fairing well in chip stack ratio – he is holding a mere 9, 400. His PokerStars Team mate, Bill Chen, is fairing much better with more than 40 thousand to start day 2. Just to put in a good face for Team Poker Stars, Luca Pagano, is among the chip leaders with 56 thousand on hand for the start of day 2.
With a number of Team Poker Star’s Pro’s still in the running for the Copenhagen EPT pay out of 21, 086, 400 Euro’s, this will be a competition worth watching.

In a recent case the British appeals court established, under UK law, that poker is not a game of skill, but a game of chance. By doing this the courts are requiring that all small pubs and private clubs that would like to host a poker game or poker tournament become licensed. The case that brought this argument was Derek Kelly who ran the Gutshot Private Club located in Clarkenwell, London. He hosted poker games in the private club in which they took fees and rake for the games. His original defense that was turned over is that poker is a game of skill, similar to chess. The jury did not agree with his argument, and neither did the Courts of Appeals.

As online poker has gained popularity, many countries have taken note. Two have taken actions that support both the industry, and their countries. Sweden was the first to launch a state run online poker room, Svenska Spel. This poker room has forged ahead and developed some of the greatest technologies and securities available to the online poker industry. They are no longer alone in the endeavor. Austria’s Win2Day began accepting registrations from Austrian citizens to play in the last week.
One bonus that Win2Day is offering over Svenska Spel is the freeroll. As part of their launch, they will be giving away more than 72 thousand dollars through the freeroll competitions. Also available through the new government run poker room are satellite for the Casinos Austria Poker Tour aka CAPT. The prize pool will be paying out more than 7 million dollars through 6 live events between February and October. Satellites available at the online poker room Win2Day will open the door for those who do not typically enter the tour, but can play the game.
Take note of the responsible gaming practices already in place such as the deposit limit, and rake back set to 2.5 percent. This is certain to be the first not the only steps on enforcing responsible gaming at the online poker site for Austria. With this kind of money being raised online, there is no telling the kind of bonus the Austrian Government will be able to give back to their citizens.
