Treasury Dept. Expected to Delay Enforcement of UIGEA 6 Months
So that oppressive law with the long-winded name (UIGEA for short) that will officially let the punishing begin of online poker operators still serving U.S. customers, is a little further at bay than it had been a moment ago. Reports have been coming out left and right that the U.S. Treasury Dept. plans to delay the intended Dec. 1 deadline that poker operators had to tweak their systems to comply with these demands (namely to make sure its software didn’t let a U.S. payer slip through).
This is probably in large part due to the delay in voting on the many bills facing congress right now that would either countermand the UIGEA or make it moot. So, in other words, the Treasury Dept. wants to save itself a lot of trouble and potential lawsuits by giving it 6 more months to see if Congress makes it legal to play online poker in the U.S. again.
